OpenAI is predicting a major shift in the next five years around who will get the bulk of its computing power.
By 2030, OpenAI expects to get three-quarters of its data center capacity from Stargate, a project that is expected to be heavily funded by SoftBank, one of OpenAI’s newest financial backers.
This represents a major shift from Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest shareholder, which meets most of the startup’s power needs today, Tech Crunch writes , reports DLY.
But, change will not happen overnight.
OpenAI still plans to increase its spending on Microsoft-owned data centers in the coming years.
Otherwise, during this time, OpenAI’s overall costs are set to increase dramatically.
The company is reported to be planning to spend $20 billion in cash through 2027, far more than the $5 billion it reportedly spent in 2024.
